Toronto Engagement Photo Locations: 5 Gems You’ll Love

August 20th, 2024

Once upon a time, the thought of shooting engagement photos in Toronto kinda stressed me out. The sprawling city, the bustling crowds & traffic, the potential for unpredictable weather - it all seemed a bit daunting. I came by my unease honestly - as a gal from rural Alberta it was a lot! Luckily, th a little exploration and some insider tips, I quickly discovered that Toronto is packed with little gems perfect for capturing this uniquely special time in your relationship.

  • The right location can highlight your unique relationship and personalities. For example, if you and your partner love nature, a beautiful park or garden might be perfect. If you’re both city lovers, an urban setting can capture your shared passion for the hustle and bustle of city life.

  • Choosing a location where you feel comfortable and at ease will help you relax in front of the camera. Familiar or meaningful places can evoke positive emotions, making the photos more authentic and capturing genuine interactions between you and your partner.

  • I'm a firm believer that photos are about the individuals IN them, but I do agree that the backdrop you choose plays an important role in telling the story of your engagement. Obviously location/backdrop play a significant role in the overall visual appeal of the photos. Unique locations with beautiful scenery, interesting architecture, or vibrant colours can make your photos stand out and give them a distinctive look.

  • Selecting a location that holds sentimental value can add depth to your photos. Whether it's the spot where you first met, your favorite date location, or a place you both love to visit, these locations add a layer of personal significance to the images. Extra points if you opt to not just "take photos" but to spend time doing an activity you love in that special location.

  • Location esthetic can help provide context to your wedding vibe/theme. Engagement photos are often used in wedding save-the-dates, invitations, websites, or decor, so choosing a location that aligns with your wedding theme can create a cohesive look. It also gives your guests a preview of the style they can expect at your wedding.

OKAY - now... on to what you came for! 5 great spots to shoot engagement photos across Toronto!

1. RC Harris Water Treatment Plant

  • The RC Harris Water Treatment Plant is an example of Art Deco architecture, with grand facades, intricate details, and sweeping staircases. Unlike more traditional engagement photo locations, the RC Harris Water Treatment Plant offers something truly unique. The blend of industrial functionality and artistic design makes it an iconic Toronto landmark, providing a distinctive setting that will make your photos stand out.

  • Best Time: Early morning FOR SURE! This place is so unique and beautiful making it really popular for photos as well as folks out for a stroll or picnic. Get there for sunrise to get the place to yourselves.

2. The Esplanade

  • This area offers a unique mix of urban and scenic elements. You’ll find charming streets, lush parks, and views of the iconic St. Lawrence Market area. This variety allows you to capture both the vibrant city life and serene, green spaces in your photos. The Esplanade is located near several Toronto landmarks, such as the Flatiron Building, St. Lawrence Market, and Berczy Park. These spots offer additional opportunities for iconic and recognizable backdrops, adding a sense of place and context to your engagement session.

  • Best Time: Early morning for a quiet atmosphere, softer light, and cooler temperatures (if you're shooting in summer).

3. Liberty Village

  • Liberty Village is known for its mix of contemporary condos and restored industrial buildings. The red-brick warehouses and sleek modern structures provide a perfect backdrop for couples who want an urban, edgy vibe with a touch of historical character. It also offers a variety of backdrops in a small area as well as some pretty gorgeous murals!

  • Best Time: Either early morning or after "business hours" Liberty Village is home to many businesses so it's best to go after the work day is done. This is also helpful for softer light as the red brick can sometimes cast a little bit of pink onto subjects

4. Scarborough Bluffs

  • Why It’s Great: The Scarborough Bluffs offer stunning views of Lake Ontario, towering cliffs, and scenic beaches. This location is ideal for couples who love nature and want dramatic, scenic backdrops. The contrast between the blue water, white cliffs, and green vegetation creates striking photos.

  • Best Time: Sunset for a golden glow over the water and cliffs but stick to weekdays to avoid the busy beach go-ers. Sunrise is also a great time to head to the Bluffs if you want some quiet.

5. Think Outside the Box

  • Why It’s Great: We love this busy and exciting city of ours, but sometimes "city" or the available nature just aren't the vibe. Your engagement photos should represent you as a couple! This is your chance to be documented together doing something that you truly enjoy. Go grab a cocktail or a slice of pizza at your favourite spot. Walk your dog around the neighbourhood where you fell in love. Revisit the site where your partner proposed. It's all special when it means something to you.

  • Best Time: Any time
