Some places just feel like they hold stories. While I’m not a born & raised Ontarian, since I arrived here several years ago, Muskoka has been one of those places for me. I know I’m not alone in feeling this way. It’s a part of Ontario that feels slower, quieter, and deeply rooted in memory for so many families. There’s a reason people return to their cottages year after year, generation after generation.
It’s not just about the view (though the views are pretty incredible). It’s about what happens there. The time that lingers. The moments that stay.
When Ingrid and Adam reached out about their engagement session, they knew they wanted to bring me up to Bala, a small town tucked into Muskoka. It’s a place layered with meaning for them — a home away from home where they spend slow weekends at the family cottage. Where they walk into town for ice cream. Where the lake is more than just scenery — it’s part of their relationship history.
And honestly? That’s my favourite kind of engagement session to photograph.
I work all over Ontario, but Muskoka weddings & engagements hold a special place in my heart — there’s something about the mix of nature, family, and nostalgia that just hits different.
A Little Look at Ingrid & Adam’s Session in Bala
Bala was super sleepy on a Sunday evening in September, all the cottagers had gone home leaving us plenty of space to wander. Ingrid & Adam’s session began in the Bala townsite, we strolled near the water and grabbed some casual shots. Nothing fancy, nothing overly staged. Just a walk they’d probably take anyway. The thing I love most about Muskoka sessions is how unplanned they feel. We walked and laughed and stopped whenever I saw good light or a quiet little pocket of trees.
And of course, we ended the evening at their family cottage.
There’s something really special about photographing people in places they know like the back of their hand. Their dock. Their chairs. Their boat. All the little details that make it theirs.
I photographed their session on both film and digital — something I’ve been leaning into more lately for couples who want their photos to feel a little softer, a little more nostalgic. Film has this way of slowing me down as a photographer. It makes me look harder for feeling, not just for perfect light. I feel like film really captured the nostalgia of an old family cottage, warm and gritty, a little rugged.
Honestly, the whole session just felt easy. Like hanging out with friends. Like watching a story unfold that was already there.
Why Muskoka is Perfect for Engagement Photos
If you’re looking for a location for your engagement photos and feeling stuck, I’ll say this: Muskoka just works.
Not because it’s trendy. Not because it photographs like a travel ad (even though it kind of does). But because it gives you space to relax into yourselves. No crowds. No rush. Just nature doing its thing — and you doing yours.
Muskoka offers so much variety within a small radius. Townsites like Bala or Port Carling give you those nostalgic little main street moments. Lakeside docks, pine forests, exposed rock, winding backroads — it all photographs beautifully. And most importantly, it never feels forced.
This isn’t about styled shoots or posing on a mountaintop. It’s about having room to be together without a hundred other people watching. It’s about capturing photos that feel like you — the way you laugh together when nobody’s looking, the way you curl into each other naturally when the wind picks up off the lake.
