Toronto backyard weddings: file these under “good things that happened in 2020”. This year hasn’t been what we thought it would be, has it? A year that kicked off with high hopes & excitement for a new decade quickly slipped into chaos and just trying to survive. The wedding industry was absolutely pummeled and our clients took hit after hit as restrictions constantly shifted. Emma & Killian were certainly not exempt from all the craziness – in fact, theirs was one of the first weddings that had to be postponed. With an original wedding date of March 28th, they were thrown into wedding re-planning mayhem as soon as lockdown hit. After rescheduling twice and moving the main party to next year, E&K decided to tie the knot in an intimate Toronto backyard wedding with a very limited guest list. The rollercoaster ride hasn’t been easy for them, but these two have been absolute star examples of rolling with the punches.
I arrived at Emma’s family home in Toronto on a VERY hot August afternoon and was greeted by some of the kindest people I’ve ever met. Emma & Killian’s loved ones welcomed me with open arms (from 6 feet away of course) and even laughed with me when I declared that sweat was dripping into my underwear. Did I mention it was hot? What I’m trying to say is that Emma & Killian’s families made me feel right at home as they prepared the final details for the ceremony.
Arriving guests passed a Covid-safety welcome station and helped themselves to a cocktail from an adorable little bar, adorned with flowers & family photos. They mingled social-distancing style and then witnessed the sweetest ceremony under an arch that had always been in Emma’s parent’s backyard. Bonus: one of my favourite officiants, Helen Sweet, was there to make it official. After the ceremony, E&K and I meandered the street for some golden hour portraits. I know it wasn’t the Berkeley Church event that my darling couple had originally planned for this, but boy, was it ever perfect.
Emma & Killian – THANK YOU for being so wonderful. Your positivity, joy, and love for each other was an absolute pleasure to witness in a bleak year. You are so awesome and I can’t wait to celebrate with you again soon.
PS – If anyone’s planning a Toronto backyard wedding for 2021 or 2022 – I’m your girl.
