Jess & Matt | Cluny Bistro Wedding Toronto

Jessica & Matt’s Cluny Bistro Wedding in Toronto this past spring proved for certain 3 things that I believe to be true.

#1. A big wedding doesn’t mean a better wedding
#2. You don’t need hours upon hours of photo coverage – if your budget is limited you can always opt for a “less is more” approach rather than compromise quality.
#3. Rain doesn’t effing matter.

I originally met these two beautiful people while they were planning a more traditional wedding celebration at a larger venue in Whitby. While digging into the planning process it became quickly apparent that this just wasn’t where they wanted to invest their money & their memories. It wasn’t “them” and I respect them so much for making the changes necessary to have the wedding that more accurately represented who they are. When they told me they were going to switch their venue to the Cluny Bistro in Toronto’s Distillery District on a Thursday I was so excited for them. They still wanted to book and wondered if I’d be ok with a short 3 hour photography collection? Normally this would be a no-go for a weekend wedding but let’s be honest, I don’t have anything better going on on a Thursday… plus, they’re the sweetest humans alive so it was a no-brainer.
Our time together began at Toronto’s iconic Broadview Hotel, which happens to be one of my favourite places to photograph (check out a fave Broadview wedding here). In true “downtown Toronto” fashion, our sweet groom Matt got stuck behind a major (and sadly very tragic) holdup on everyone’s favourite freeway… the DVP. He arrived at the hotel pretty late and the poor guy had to rush to get ready. You’d think this would throw things into a tailspin but Jess & Matt kept their cool and rolled with it.
Once everyone was ready we headed to the Distillery District and the rain started to fall. Again, you would think this might upset a couple who had planned an outdoor wedding but they were unfazed and insisted the chairs be set up in the out door location. As luck (karma? fate? idk) would have it the rain stopped just in time for the ceremony & we were able to do all the photos outdoors!
Just as we were wrapping up the skies opened and we ran inside while the rain poured down. It was perfectly imperfect from start to finish and I wouldn’t change a thing – I think J&M would agree. You can’t control everything; once plans are in place it’s time to let go and have the best day ever, no matter what.
