Vacation Family Session | Punta Cana

I recently had the opportunity to spend a week in Punta Cana, photographing Heather & Chris’s gorgeous destination wedding (more on that another day).  While we were there Heather & Chris chose to have me join their sweet family to do a vacation family session at the beach & pool.  I find so much inspiration in documenting candid moments of families at play and this crew certainly did not disappoint.  With 3 busy kiddos (2 of which are pretty small) let’s just say these two have their hands full!  Any parent knows that a vacation with little ones in tow is anything but relaxing lol.  Having said that it can also be a lot of fun.  I loved hanging out with these five and having the chance to experience the trip through their eyes – scroll to the bottom for more on this story.vacation session, family documentary photos, family photojournalist, travel family photographer, holiday family photos, vacation family photojournalism,

By the way my new goal is to become a destination family photojournalist. Heather, Chris and the kids got up bright and early to meet me for our family photojournalism session at the beach… at least that was the plan!  Turns out the two littlest of the crew were not a fan of the big waves, oops.  The thing about documenting real life is that we can’t always predict how kids (or any adults) are going to react in different situations; to me that’s the best part.  Heather & Chris did their best to entertain the kids and get them comfortable near the sea but in the end we opted to head to the pool.
The kids had a blast splashing their parents, smothering them with kisses, and playing with their big brother in “safer” water lol!  It was so fun to be able to capture some special family time for these sweethearts!  I think everyone should have their vacation documented this way – I know that next time we travel hiring a family photojournalist will be on my vaca-prep check list!

Family Photojournalism | Ontario

If you follow me on social media you may know that about a year ago I decided to quit family photography… well, traditional family photography anyway.  I absolutely believe that staged portraits, traditional or lifestyle are beautiful and wonderful.  I love images that others have captured for me and my family, but I wasn’t feeling fulfilled shooting them for clients.  So… I quit.
One day I was skimming through photos on my desktop of my kids and realized something that made me really sad.  I wasn’t in any of them!  You see, in our house I’m the photographer.  I’m the one that packs a camera and film to shoot our every day life, trips to the zoo, the splash pad, and walks in the woods… but I’m never in the photos.  My heart broke.  I understand how important it is to leave photos for my kids to remember me and I truly feel that every day moments are just as beautiful as the ones we get dressed up for.  That was the day I discovered Family Photojournalism and found a new appreciation for beauty in real life.
I randomly found a link to a CreativeLive course on “Day in the Life” photography by INSANELY talented artist Kirsten Lewis and bought it on a whim.  As I watched her teaching I felt it in my gut: the ache to create, that need to deliver a moment that is so much more than meets the eye.   I’ve spent the better part of this past year pushing and practicing in hopes that others would eventually see the value in this type of session.  I knew it would be an uphill battle but slowly… very slowly… people are starting to catch on.
I’m extremely thankful to my colleague Olivia (who is a wonderful photographer herself – check her out HERE) for allowing me into her home to capture her family in my own way, the way I saw them, without direction.  Just as they are in real life.
